Martin initially trained at Cambridge University and in 1995 moved to St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London (now part of Imperial College) for clinical training. He qualified from St Mary’s Hospital in 1998 and commenced initial surgical training in London and Chichester, before moving to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London to do a 2-year period of research into methods of risk adjusting and reporting surgical outcomes. This research ultimately led to a Masters Degree in Surgery from the University of London as well as a number of publications and presentations at international scientific meetings.
Martin’s further urological training was conducted in London and the South-East of England including two years at Guy’s Hospital subspecialising in complex kidney surgery for stones and cancer. He was awarded a travelling grant from the European School of Urology and visited the major urological training centre at Leuven in Belgium. Martin’s main interests include laparoscopic and robotic kidney surgery, prostate cancer diagnosis, benign prostate problems, and treatment of kidney stones.
Martin was the Clinical Lead of the Urology Department at Broomfield Hospital until 2018, and introduced various projects to improve and streamline the quality of patient care. In 2022, he was appointed Clinical Director for Urology at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and is, amongst other things, responsible for the reconfiguration of urological services across Southend, Broomfield and Basildon Hospitals
Outside of medicine, Martin is a keen runner and cyclist, and an enthusiastic rugby fan. He is married to Anna, a Consultant Paediatrician, and has three children.
